ALLEGED BOKO HARAM FOUNDER AND PDP NATIONAL CHAIRMAN, ALI MODU SHERIFF THREATENS FEMI FANI KAYODE

In what appears to be a looming showdown within the ranks of the Peoples Democratic Party of Nigeria (PDP), its national chairman Mr. Ali Modu Sheriff who was recently alleged to be  the founder of  Boko Haram has threatened to deal decisively with Femi Fani Kayode stating that he will not go scot free.

It should be recalled that the recent rise of Ali Modu Sheriff as the party's chairman has elicited much negative reaction from party members, Nigerians and the international media. In a recent interview aired by Channels television, Femi Fani Kayode alleged publicly that the now embattled national chairman, Mr. Ali Modu Sheriff is the founder of Boko Haram and as
such cannot represent the PDP as its chairman. Shortly after, the CNN in a news telecast ridiculed Nigeria and the PDP by labeling  the emergence of Ali Modu Sheriff, the founder of the dreaded Boko Haram  as PDP chairman.

Meanwhile, Fani Kayode has expressed his readiness for a showdown with the national chairman, Mr.  Ali Modu Sheriff  whose emergence as PDP chairman in his view is unacceptable because Ali Sheriff is divisive and has come to divide Nigeria and the PDP.

While the last of this evolving situation is yet to be seen, it is nauseating to live with the idea that a major political party in Nigeria is being chaired by a man alleged to be the founder of one of the deadliest terrorists groups in the world. Correctly or incorrectly, it is essential for the Nigerian security apparatus to start acting to substantiate this allegation or debunk it.

CNN NAMES ALI MODU SHERIFF AS BOKO HARAM FOUNDER.

CNN in a recent telecast described the PDP Acting National Chairman, Mr. Ali Modu Sheriff as the founder of Boko Haram. This is an allegation that Mr. Ali has himself denied. However, it calls for some worry for such a personality alleged to be involved with the globally dreaded terrorist group as Boko Haram to be appointed to the apex position of a major political party in Nigeria. This is a move that all Nigerians have a moral responsibility to reject because it is misrepresentational of the country and the entire political institution of state.

ARE NIGERIAN SOLDIERS REALLY KILLING BIAFRAN PROTESTERS?

The event that appears to be taking place around the IPOB agitation in recent time as reported widely by Nigerian and global news media as well as the social network media is alarming as the Nigerian army are alleged to be carrying out genocidal attack on the unarmed IPOB agitators.

If this is true, the Nigerian state should rise against such inhumanity and hold these teleguided soldiers responsible for such evil act. Meanwhile, President Buhari should be held accountable for such a menace that is capable of throwing the Nigerian state into an imminent civil war.

If history is to remind Nigerians of anything, this report is an attempt to replay Nigeria through certain remote issues that led to the 1967 civil war.

For Nigerians, the right to self-determination is not a death sentence. It should give room for proper negotiation as it did happen in UK and as it is currently happening in Spain and some other parts of the world.

In this picture of the 20th of February 2016, the soldiers are reported to be abducting Ibo youths and taking them to the bush for execution.

This is a clarion call on the Nigerian political community, the human right watch and the entire global human right apparatus to investigate and call the Nigerian state to order.

Nigeria require a political solution to the Biafran crises and not genocide.

FUEL SCARCITY IN NIGERIA: SHAME ON LAI MOHAMED FOR NOT OWNING UP TO SIGNS OF FAILURE OF THE BUHARI LED ADMINISTRATION.

The statement on Vanguard Nigeria newspaper credited to Nigeria’s Minister of Information, Mr. Lai Mohammed who heaped the blame of fuel scarcity in Nigeria on ex-President Goodluck Jonathan during a statehouse briefing yesterday, is not only shameful but unacceptable.

It would be recalled that the mouth piece of the Federal Government of Nigeria, Mr.  Lai Mohammed did promise Nigerians in the first week of December 2015 that fuel scarcity will be over in days. To many Nigerians, it meant that the Federal Government was already nipping the problem of scarcity in the bud. The euphoria given birth to by the promise was a welcome relief as Nigerians looked ahead to seeing the problem fuel scarcity abated. To now turn around after a couple of weeks with blame games on the past administration because of the worsening situation of the scarcity is a huge sign of irresponsibility on the part of government and it shows not only unseriousness but a perceived cluelessness in dealing with the myriad of crisis bedeviling  the Nigerian state today.

The Buhari led administration and Minister Lai Mohamed need to be reminded that the Jonathanadministration was voted out for Nigeria to have a better economy, a more secured state, an accountable and responsible government as well as a more politically healthy Nigeria. But if in seven months after the inauguration of the present administration, Nigerians cannot heave a sigh of relief on certain basic fundamental necessities necessary for driving growth and economic stability; then questions need to be asked very seriously.

It must equally be stated that Nigerians are tired of the blames games on the past administration. Nigerians want to see some real effort that the Buhari administration is making to tackle domestic issues.  The only thing Nigerians appear to be seeing  much of is the loud noise about those who have stolen from the nation and the court cases without conviction as well as what is now increasingly turning out to be some meaningless travels by the President that is not advancing the economic course of the Nigerian people.

Conclusively, the Buhari administration should sit up and be focused in taking Nigeria more seriously. The minister of Information should be credited to making serious and honest statements to Nigerians.  Nigerians are no longer interested in who or what caused the problem.  The interest is on how and when the problem will be solved. That is why the government was elected.

NIGERIA, BIAFRA: THE UNHOLY MARRIAGE OF A NATION

The recent call by different groups in the eastern part of Nigeria for a self-rule under the name Biafra has taken a dimension worthy of serious attention. Even though the process started almost imperceptibly years ago by different skirmishes of calls and actions that now had reasons to fuse together following the apparent relegation of the Ibos in the cabinet of current President Buhari as well as the arrest and detention of Mr Kanu, the Radio Biafra reporter; one is therefore poised to ask if the Ibos have a legitimate course?

Tracing the history of Nigeria to the colonial era through the various stages of nationalism and the eventual independence of Nigeria in 1960 as well as its post-independence political developments till date; it is fair to say that the Nigerian state as amalgamated in 1914 is an unholy marriage of a people whose cultural and social differences permits clashes that will always lead to overall national commotion and instability.

The structural, political and cultural dynamics of Nigeria’s major ethnic groups (Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo) remain historically at variance with unity and national development. Events in history have shown that it is the level of distrust among these ethnic groups that is undoubtedly the footstool to anti national development and advancement. It has provocatively gotten to a point where leaders are not judged by the content of their competence but by what tribe they represent.

Meanwhile, it is essential to observe that while the Hausas and the Yorubas have a
wide structural scale of conformity in their locally centralized social political organization, hierarchy and religion; the Ibos are everything the opposite as they have a structure that is locally decentralized in their social political organization. And they predominantly hold a different religious view. Apart from that, the Igbos have proven in history nationally and locally to be a domineering sect that believes in individualistic enterprise as strength to human relevance. This equally accounts for the reason the Ibos do not accept a central local leadership like a king or something.

It must be said that it is the domineering attribute of the Igbos as evidently espoused between the early and mid-1960’s that led to the connivance of the Yorubas and Hausa against them on the leadership front. Meanwhile the events leading to the Nigeria/ Biafra civil war of 1967 – 1970 further deepened the distrust among these national galatics. While the Housas see the Igbos as a people that must never be allowed to test the Nigerian presidency, the Igbos see the Yorubas as traitors and con people and the Yorubas express great discomfort with the Igbos as desperate and dangerous people. These postulations where greatly alluded to by the likes of Sir Ahmadu Bello, the first Premier of the Northern Region of Nigeria as well as some Nigerian writers of thought. This may be said to be a reason why Nigeria never had an Igbo president since 1966.

On the part of the Igbos however, it must be observed that they have equally been a problem to themselves as they lack the social political unity necessary to lead a nation like Nigeria. This statement is made against the backdrop of the fact that whenever there is a presidential election in Nigeria, while the Yorubas and the Housas are able to harmonize themselves and unite behind a single candidate representing their ethnicity, the Igbos are on the contrary as a number of them jostle without harmony for the same spot. In the end, they don’t even succeed beyond the primary level. It is therefore fare to state that unless and until the Ibos harmonize themselves politically, they may still be very far away from getting the presidency of Nigeria. And they will remain marginalized as they claim.

The only succour the Ibos appear to have is secession as a continuation from where Late Chief Odumegwu Ojukwu left off. Hence, the call of Biafra has become quite loud and clear. Interestingly and very worrisome is the fact that some activities of the
present call by the proponents of Biafra are beginning to be reminiscent of some of the remotes events that preceded the 1967 civil war that many still regard as genocide against the Igbos. Reports have it that the Hausas living in the Eastern part of Nigeria have begun to migrate to the North while many Igbos in the North have begun to move to the East. Apart from that, there are unconfirmed reports that Igbos in the North have become targets by some Northern hoodlums. More than that, the call for secession by the Biafra proponents and supporters have begun to lead to death of protesters in the hand of the Nigerian arm force. All these are reminiscent of the late 60’s before the civil war.

The aforementioned facts is evident that Nigeria as a state with its current makeup can best be described as a pyramid standing on its head because the divide and distrust within the component parts of the state is unsustainable. One would have expected that some of these factors of anti-national development would have been buried with Nigeria’s political ancestors. But the seed has grown even stronger by the generations passing by. To add insult to injury, no Nigerian government has even given true representation to the people. It has always been a tale of corruption and stealing of state resources by a few in the political class. Sadly, the President Buhari’s led regime has not shown viable signs of being different from what Nigerians are used to. As a matter of fact, the economic indices are showing dangerous weakness six months into his administration. At the moment, the devaluation of the Naira is dangerously unprecedented.  No availability of petroleum product for the ordinary Nigerian commuters. Unemployment is sky rocketing and companies and private investments are folding up because of unsustainability. And all Nigerians are hearing is anti-corruption like nothing else matters to the government. Yet nobody is hearing anything about convictions. It is all beginning to look increasing like a charade to buy time in failure.

While one will wait a little longer to be certain of the direction of the present
government, it might be fair to say that given the totality of happenings around the country today, there is the need for Nigeria to accept a referendum for self-determination by the Biafra people. This might be the way out for Nigeria and everybody to have a lasting peace because the agreement to amalgamate the country in the first place was not by mutual consent, but by the sole decision of the colonizer. It is essential to revisit the beginning and straighten things out for a better country and future for the people that make up the country.

PRESIDENT BUHARI; FIVE MONTHS IN EVALUATION

PRESIDENT BUHARI; FIVE MONTHS IN EVALUATION

by Lamptay Oriakhi

While many Nigerians have enthusiastically been supporting President Buhari as the expected change factor that everyone is hoping would turn the fortunes of the giant of Africa around; it is essential to remind all that five months is already gone in the life of the administration. A careful evaluation of this last five months of the administration is laden with mixed feelings over what to expect in the coming months and years.

CORRUPTION

First, it is essential to applaud the fearlessness with which the administration is taking on corruption and corrupt officials. However, Nigerians have a feeling that the matter is being handled with some sought of selective exploration as some people who are seen to be in the camp of the President  appear not to be in the radar. More than that, the process itself appears to lack focus and coordination as too many rats are in the chase at the same time. Hence it is advised that government get better focused and concentrate on getting indictments with a coordinated and focused chase of suspects.

TERRORISM AND INSECURITY

With all the rhetoric of Mr. President prior to his election, everyone had a feeling that by this time, the issue of Boko Haram would be a thing of the pass.  It is however frightening that the terrorists sect have become even more daring in recent time. It would appear that the Nigerian military and intelligent apparatus are not doing enough to secure Nigerians.  This is one area that the government really needs to get her ass together and make do with their promise of ending insurgency by the end of 2015.
More than the issue of Boko Haram, it has become crucially essential for government to start looking into the atrocities of the Fulani herdsmen and the dangerous onslaughts on villages and settlements around the country. It is also important to look into the legal backing and empowerment of arms carrying by these herdsmen who have become terrorists themselves.
It is equally of note that the spate of kidnapping and armed robbery in Nigeria is getting alarming. And it is essential that the local, state and National security apparatus are strengthened by government for effective cubing of the menace.
By and large, the Nigerian state is still seriously challenged by the forces of insecurity.

ECONOMY

The strength of any nation is her economy. And it is disturbing to note that five months into the life of the present administration, the economy is not showing signs of hope for the future. As a matter of fact, the free fall of the Naira against other currencies of the world is a dangerous tone to economic permutations. In a situation where jobs are not being created and the environment for peaceful and secured enterprise operation is not guaranteed, crime and social vices must be on the increase. It is of paramount importance for the President to put a very smart economic team together to resolve Nigeria’s economic crisis before the country gets bankrupt.

NATIONAL SOVEREIGNTY

On a very worrisome note, there is upsurge in the call for secession by the easterners of Nigeria. Meanwhile, the Niger Delta people are beginning to take up arms. While the Nigerian security has been deployed to quell these uprisings around these areas, the government must thread with wisdom. This is without sweeping the concerns of these people under the carpet. There is probably a need to a genuine national conference on the terms of the unity and sanctity of Nigeria as a state.

CONCLUSION

There is no doubt that the Nigerian state is a state sitting on the keg of a gun powder in many ways. If things are gotten right, the nation is bound to smile. If not, the looming danger may drive an unexpected outburst. However, one can conclude that the intent and purpose of president Buhari is good. But he needs a more experienced and purposeful people to work with in different areas of the Nigerian state. That way, there may be some cohesion and purposeful direction in the economy.  We shall hope that the assignment of portfolios to ministers would start giving hope to the future of the administration and Nigeria.
